Royal British Legion Riders (RLBR)By Robert Millar
Dempsey Barracks was alive with the sound of engines but it wasn’t from the armoured vehicles on 29 August 2005. The Royal British Legion Riders Branch is a relatively new Branch with approximately 100 members from all over the UK. Eleven members of the new national Branch met in Plymouth to start their sponsored tour of Germany; travelling through Belgium and Holland to visit, Osnabruck, Celle and the Herz mountains. They are all motorcycle enthusiasts that support the aims of the Royal British Legion, in promoting remembrance and providing welfare services for ex-service personnel and their dependants. The aim of the Tour was to raise funds for the Poppy Appeal Benevolent Fund.
The Riders were greeted by members of the Paderborn Branch outside the Poppy Inn, where, a framed Riders Branch Badge was presented to Paderborn Branch Chairman, Jim Griffiths MBE. Paul Pollard, Riders Branch Chairman was presented with a certificate of friendship from the Paderborn Branch.
Many of the Members from the Riders Branch had served in Germany and were nostalgic about their return visit. The bockwurst and German beer served in the Poppy Inn was welcomed. The Branch has members that are still serving in HM Forces. The idea of such a common interest is proving to be a valuable recruiting tool for the Royal British Legion.
